We’ve all heard of Mommybloggers, but what about Daddybloggers? That’s the phenomenon detailed in the recent Toronto Globe and Mail article “Daddy’s lost his job – now he’s got a blog.” They story made the point that more men than women have suffered job losses during the recent recession, which fed into the trend of Daddyblogging.

Daddyhood may be a prerequisite to becoming a Daddyblogger, but like their Mommyblogger counterparts, Daddybloggers don’t limit themselves to blogging about their kids. In fact, according to the Globe and Mail story, Daddyblogging has become a sort of de facto support network for stay at home dads who may have identity issues associated with taking on a new role in life. Of course, this is not always the case. Some stay at home dads are also work at home dads, and some Daddy blogs start sounding a little like traditional Mommyblogs when they discuss the challenges of work, family and free time, which just goes to show that maybe we’re all actually from Earth rather than Venus and Mars.

Ready to connect with the stay-at-home-dad-osphere? Here are some Daddyblogs to get you started:

Clark Kent’s Lunchbox – This is the blog of Ron Mattock, the Daddyblogger featured most prominently in the Globe and Mail article. In his own words, Clark Kent’s Lunchbox is about “dealing with issues like balancing the checkbook, peanut allergies… male depression, blended families, divorce fall-out, long-distance parenting, and parental alienation.” He’s quick to add, rightfully “I require powers and abilities far beyond those of mere mortals.”

Daddy Dialectic – The blog of Jeremy Adam Smith, author of The Daddy Shift: How Stay-at-Home Dads, Breadwinning Moms, and Shared Parenting Are Transforming the American Family

Laid Off Dad – A NYC Dad who chases his child around bookstores and is snarkily “biding his time between layoffs.”

Dudes on Diapers
– This Daddy, in true Dude fashion, calls his child the “babester” while blogging about his life as a stay at home dad.

This Father’s Day, let’s all take a moment to think of Dads, stay-at-home and otherwise. And, if like me, you have a father who is notoriously hard to buy for, why not donate to a favorite charity in his name? If you are having trouble picking a charity, the Father’s Day Fund was created especially to honor fathers and 100% of all donations go directly to cancer research.
