Back to Work Moms

Happy Mother's Day, a little belated but no less affectionate (mom). Since we're here to support the mother's with a home based business, the "part-time" Mom, the working Mom (though what Mom isn't working??), I wanted to share as you go back to work, how much you mean to us every day. It is amazing, alone, that we have 11 million stay at home moms in the United States; but more, that there are 47 million mother's in the workforce, most wrestling with time spent between the office and home.

On one hand, it is calculated that stay at home moms earn, effectively, $123,000 (according to salary.com); a salary envious to many. Many more are juggling kids and trying to prioritize time for a business, a challenge without exceptional time management and a few tools to help you out.

"I did all the accounting for the restaurant and still kept a little bit of my career going but was focused on my kids," said Theresa Green to the El Paso Times, who with her husband co-owns the Great American Land and Cattle Co. "When the kids need me 100 percent, then they got me 100 percent."

How can we help more Moms succeed at work and home?

Working from home is up more than 23% in the last decade, growing nearly twice as quickly as the overall workforce. But working from home can be hard, certainly harder than the sign on the roadside implies, and with women approximately 53 percent of the people working at home, there are more Moms than I can count who can lend some advice and some experience to these endeavors.

There are a few great resources for finding opportunities to earn a living or supplement your income from home. Check out JobsForMoms.com or WAHM.com; both recognized for being fantastic job boards.

Major sites from CafeMom to BizyMoms offer an ear to bend and unique ideas to support unique needs of moms in the work force. The Recession Guide on CafeMom has ways to save time and money that will outlast the recession itself while BizyMoms' top 40, chronicles great business ideas. With a little digging, you can find true gems online as moms turn to blogs as a way to share their experiences with work, life, and families.

What's been your experience? In what line of work have you found success at home? Certainly, bookkeeping from home is a lucrative field, outpacing the growth of many other industries, and Outright makes it simple and inexpensive to get started. But I'm curious what else Moms are doing as I know that the best I can do for my wife, the mother of my children, is make her life a little easier. No one knows better than you.
